Hi, I’m Angela.

As someone who has been in recovery for over thirty years, I’ve witnessed some of the most gifted, creative people lose themselves in repeated cycles of crisis — not because they lacked strength, but because they didn’t know how to work with these states.

My mission is to help people untangle those inner knots, so they can move from survival to genuine freedom and flow.

We have innate tools to transform these challenges into possibilities.

Let UNTANGLE be your guide to unwinding chaos and reclaiming life.

“With passion and personal engagement, as well as psychological advice which is both current and classic, Untangle is an ambitious project, offering thoughtful and creative new directions.”

Marc Lewis, Neuroscientist, author of Memoirs of an Addicted Brain and The Biology of Desire

Is untangle right for you?

Untangling shows people how to become safe enough to emerge from hiding so they can embody their purposeful life.

Each choice we make to avoid, ignore, hide, or stay stuck in relapse patterns serves a protective purpose but also keeps our lives small and cut off from joy and an authentic sense of purpose. The Untangle Method™ gives you the courage and tools to unwind these destructive states so you can feel safe and grounded. It is your roadmap home to yourself.

Untangling invites us to look around our environment and notice what is “not working.” Angela then shows us how to identify our blocks and use our innate tools to get out of them - nature, movement, storytelling, imagination, and decluttering.

This will support you if:

  • you are hiding and trying to stay invisible because of shame, and need tools to feel good enough to show up and be seen

  • you escape from life’s problems with substances, spending, screens, procrastination, and isolating

  • you had the chance to show up for your dreams - in the arts, at work, or in your own business, but couldn’t pull it off because the past is holding you back

  • you have relational, sexual, or childhood trauma that new daily practices would support you to thrive

  • you under-earn or over-spend to avoid intimacy and relationships

  • you feel constantly overwhelmed and in crisis, and want your life to be manageable

About Me

Angela McKinney in yellow jacket with stack of Untangle books in front

For the past twenty years, Angela McKinney has been transforming people's lives, including her own, as a practitioner, educator, and somatic guide.

Angela is an addiction recovery expert and speaker on habits, decision-making, and continuous growth. Her 3-Step mind-body system, The Untangle Method™, combines research in the neurobiology of trauma with a creative approach to improving the quality of our lives.

Angela engineered this method by posing and researching such questions as:

  • How can our fragility become reshaped into resources of resilience?

  • How can we negotiate the space between the part of us that is reluctant to change and the part of us that is hungry for change to build an integrated, whole system?

Her debut book, Untangle: How to Create Big Possibilities Through Small Changes, will guide readers through this process with accessible, sensitive lessons and candid stories.

She shares her personal story, tools, and methodology for overcoming childhood trauma through The Untangle Method™ tools in her book, newsletter, podcast, signature online group program, and intimate in-person retreats. In addition to being a certified recovery coach since 2000, Angela received her clinical psychology degree from Antioch University.
